Pharmaceutical Industry: Pharmaceutical tannic acid applications in medicine are primarily based on its pharmacological activity.
‌Topical Treatment‌: With its astringent properties, tannic acid binds with proteins to form insoluble complexes, commonly used to treat minor skin wounds, burns and ulcers as a local astringent. Its hemostatic properties also make it suitable for local hemostasis after oral surgery.‌
‌Oral Adjunctive Treatment‌: Tannic acid can be used as adjunctive treatment for gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhea.‌
‌Detoxification and Cardiovascular Effects‌: Tannic acid can serve as an antidote for alkaloid and certain heavy metal ion poisoning, reducing body absorption through chelation and precipitation. Its ability to complex with calcium ions can resist smooth muscle calcium-induced contraction, helping to lower blood pressure.‌
